Terms of Service

Effective date: 15 April 2026

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of MapRiot’s map tile API and related services (“Service”) operated by Patrik Drhlík, IČO: 04472551, Ještědská 37, Liberec XIX-Horní Hanychov, 460 08 Liberec, Czech Republic (“MapRiot”, “we”, “us”).

By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old to use the Service. By registering, you confirm that you meet this requirement.

2. Account

You must register for an account to access the Service. You are responsible for keeping your API keys confidential and for all activity that occurs under your account. You can view, create, and revoke API keys at any time from your dashboard. If you suspect unauthorized use, contact us at support@mapriot.com immediately.

Creating multiple accounts to gain additional free usage is not permitted and is grounds for termination.

3. The Service

MapRiot provides two approaches to displaying maps, plus additional data APIs:

Style API — a MapLibre-compatible style that references individual data sources (planet vectors, contours, hillshading, terrain relief). Your map library fetches each source’s tiles separately and composites them in the client. Works with MapLibre GL JS and compatible libraries.

Composite raster API — a standard XYZ tile endpoint served by MapRiot’s rendering server. All layers are blended into a single image per tile position on the server. Works with any library that accepts a tile URL, including Leaflet.

Other APIs:

  • Elevation queries — terrain height lookups by coordinate
  • Static map images — server-rendered map snapshots at a given location and zoom

Offline map downloads are available as a separate enterprise service. Contact us for details.

4. Units and Usage

Usage is measured in units. Each request type carries the following weight:

Request typeUnits
1 source tile (any type)1
1 composite raster tile5
1 elevation query1
1 static map image10

Source tiles include all individually served data layers — planet vector tiles, contour tiles, hillshading tiles, and terrain relief tiles. Style assets — including style JSON, TileJSON, fonts, and map icons — are free and not counted.

When using the Style API, each data source loads its tiles independently. A typical outdoor style with four sources (planet, contours, hillshading, relief) generates four requests per tile position, each costing 1 unit. The composite raster API generates a single request per tile position at 5 units, covering all layers at once. For complex styles, composite raster is often more unit-efficient.

Your plan’s monthly unit allowance is shown in your account dashboard or agreed separately for custom plans. We reserve the right to update unit weights and pricing with reasonable notice.

5. Data Accuracy and Coverage

Map data for vector tiles is sourced from OpenStreetMap, a community-maintained dataset updated weekly. OpenStreetMap data is licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL). If you create a derivative database from this data, the ODbL requires you to share it under the same licence — make sure you understand the details before doing so.

We are not responsible for the accuracy, completeness, or content of OpenStreetMap data. Contributions are made by volunteers worldwide and may contain errors, outdated information, or inappropriate content.

Hillshading and contour data are sourced from various elevation datasets. Accuracy and resolution vary by region and data source. These layers do not yet cover all countries — coverage is expanding gradually. You can request coverage for a specific region by contacting support@mapriot.com.

Do not rely on MapRiot data for safety-critical decisions, navigation, or any application where data inaccuracy could cause harm.

6. Free Tier

We offer a free tier at our discretion. The free tier is for non-commercial use only, including personal projects, educational use, OpenStreetMap community projects, and hobby applications. Commercial use of any kind requires a paid plan (Starter, Pro, or Enterprise).

The free tier gives access to vector tiles, raster tiles, elevation queries, and static map images up to a monthly unit limit.

We may modify, suspend, or discontinue the free tier at any time. Accounts that show no activity for an extended period may be removed.

7. Paid and Custom Plans

Paid plans (Starter and Pro) and custom enterprise pricing are available on request. All paid plans are agreed by invoice. All prices are final — VAT is not applied. There are no SLAs unless explicitly included in a custom plan.

8. Attribution

All maps displayed using the Service must include the following attribution, clearly visible at all times:

<a href="https://mapriot.com/copyright">© MapRiot.com</a>
<a href="https://openstreetmap.org/copyright">© OpenStreetMap contributors</a>

The attribution must link to the respective copyright pages and remain legible. On small screens it may be placed behind a one-tap popup. Removing, hiding, or obscuring attribution is a violation of these Terms and grounds for immediate termination.

9. Acceptable Use

Commercial use is permitted on paid plans (Starter, Pro, Enterprise). The free tier is restricted to non-commercial use — see Section 6.

You may not:

  • Resell, redistribute, proxy, or sublicense map tile data or the Service to third parties
  • Bulk-download, pre-cache, or scrape tiles beyond what a real user would load in a normal session
  • Use the Service to train machine learning models or build derivative datasets for redistribution
  • Strip, modify, or forge HTTP headers to misrepresent your application or usage
  • Create multiple accounts to circumvent usage limits
  • Use the Service for any unlawful purpose

Your application’s end users must be subject to terms that restrict them to these same limits.

10. Intellectual Property

MapRiot retains all intellectual property rights in the Service, including the tile rendering pipeline, map styles, API, and any software we provide. Nothing in these Terms transfers any of those rights to you.

You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to access and use the Service for the purposes described in these Terms. This licence ends when your account is terminated.

OpenStreetMap data embedded in tiles is owned by its contributors and is licensed separately under the ODbL — see Section 5.

11. Availability and Warranty

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available.” We make no guarantees about uptime, availability, data accuracy, or fitness for any particular purpose. There are no SLAs on any free or self-service plan.

We may modify, update, or discontinue any part of the Service at any time. For paid plans, we will make reasonable efforts to give advance notice of significant changes.

We are not liable for outages or degraded service caused by circumstances beyond our reasonable control — including but not limited to infrastructure provider failures, DDoS attacks, natural disasters, or internet backbone disruptions. We will do our best to restore the Service promptly.

12. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, MapRiot is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of or inability to use the Service.

Our total liability for any claim related to the Service is limited to the fees you actually paid us, if any. For free tier users, our total liability is zero.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability for fraud, gross negligence, or death or personal injury caused by our fault. If you are a consumer in the EU, nothing in these Terms affects your statutory rights under applicable consumer protection law.

13. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access immediately if you violate these Terms or abuse the Service. For paid plans not terminated for cause, we will give at least 30 days’ notice.

You may close your account at any time by contacting support@mapriot.com.

On termination, your API keys stop working and you must cease using the Service.

14. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you at least 30 days before significant changes take effect, via the dashboard or email. If you do not agree with the changes, you may close your account before they take effect. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.

15. Governing Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Czech Republic. Any disputes shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the competent courts of the Czech Republic.

If you are a consumer in the EU, you may also use the EU Online Dispute Resolution platform. In the Czech Republic, the out-of-court dispute resolution body is the Czech Trade Inspection Authority (ČOI).
