Copyright and sources

This is a list of sources that we use to offer our services.

OpenStreetMap (OSM)

We wouldn’t be able to offer our services without an amazing project called OpenStreetMap. It is a free and open map database that is maintained by volunteers and works in a similar fashion as Wikipedia.

OpenStreetMap is open data, licensed under the Open Data Commons Open Database License (ODbL) by the OpenStreetMap Foundation (OSMF). You can read more about the license on the official website.

Digital elevation model

These are data that add contours and hillshading to our maps.

Hillshading

Most hillshading in Europe comes from Sonny who is a geographic enthusiast from Austria. He collected and unified DTM data from most European countries and offers them for free under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) license. Sonny’s website lists all original sources.

For other countries, we use an open dataset called ALOS Global Digital Surface Model (AW3D) provided by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

Contours

We create contours for our maps from the available digital elevation models that are mentioned in the hillshading section. The following countries are exceptions and use a different source of data:

🇨🇿 Czech Republic: ZABAGED® - Altimetry - contours, Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 License

Landcover, relief, coastlines, bathymetry

We use some extra data like ocean coastlines, low zoom relief, bathymetry and landcover from free datasets provided by Natural Earth Data. All of their data are in a public domain (CC0).

Map styles

Our styles take inspiration from the OpenMapTiles schema (CC-BY 4.0) but usually differ so much that the underlying data structure is incompatible.
